Couple Recreates “The Holiday” with Festive House Swaps

Date:

In the UK, “The Holiday” has secured a special place as a beloved Christmas movie. Starring Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet, the film tells the story of two women who decide to exchange their Los Angeles mansion and quaint countryside cottage over the festive season, making it a perennial holiday favorite.

For Matt Bailey, 47, and his wife Sophie, 47, watching “The Holiday” sparked an idea. Inspired by the film, they embarked on their own house-swap adventure for a unique Christmas experience. Tired of high accommodation costs in London, they sought a change and discovered a house swap opportunity in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany, a town known for its magical Christmas charm.

Through Love Home Swap, now Home Exchange, the Baileys traded their London flat for a cozy dwelling nestled within the ancient walls of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Their stay in Germany from December 21 to December 31 was filled with enchantment, exploring the year-round Christmas museum and immersing themselves in the festive atmosphere of the picturesque town.

Their Christmas trip included strolling through the scenic town, visiting the local Christmas market, and enjoying a relaxed Christmas celebration. Despite the initial strangeness of being away from the UK during the holidays, the Baileys quickly felt at home in Germany and embraced the local customs.

Impressed by their first house swap, the adventurous couple expanded their horizons. In 2013, they traveled to Bangkok for Christmas, swapping their London flat for a centrally located apartment in the vibrant Thai capital. While Christmas Day in Bangkok felt ordinary without the traditional celebrations, they indulged in a food tour and experienced the unique festivities of the city.

Their Christmas journey continued with a visit to a Thai island post-Christmas before returning to Bangkok for a lively New Year celebration. Since then, the Baileys have relocated to Lincolnshire, started a family, and continued their house-swapping tradition. Their travels have taken them to various destinations, including Bruges, Belgium, and Bonn, Germany, for memorable holiday experiences.

Utilizing Home Exchange for 12 trips, they have saved on accommodation costs, only covering transport and food expenses during their stays. The family’s travel adventures extend beyond Christmas, with half-term holidays planned to Portugal, France, Spain, Denmark, Iceland, and Wales, showcasing their passion for exploring new destinations.
