“Crystal-Inspired Glass Bivouac to Debut at 2026 Winter Olympics”

Date:

An innovative glass structure has been designed to provide shelter for mountaineers facing high-altitude challenges. This unique camp, created by Italian design firm CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati in partnership with Salone del Mobile.Milano, will debut in Milan for the 2026 Winter Olympics before being transported by air to its permanent location in the Alps.

The striking bivouac was inspired by the natural rock formations of the Alpine landscape, with designers utilizing a 3D scan of the region to ensure seamless integration. Carlo Ratti, co-founder of CRA, emphasized the importance of blending the structure with its surroundings, contrasting it with conventional bivouacs that disrupt the natural beauty of the mountains.

The design of the bivouac aims to minimize its visual impact while maximizing functionality, incorporating features such as energy production, storage capabilities, and water harvesting through air condensation. Maria Porro, president of Salone del Mobile.Milano, praised the project for its harmony with nature and commitment to sustainable design principles.

Carlo Ratti highlighted the influence of renowned architect Gio Ponti, who likened architecture to a crystal. In this project, digital fabrication techniques were employed to create a bivouac that seamlessly integrates with the natural rock formations of the Alps, embodying a fusion of modern design and natural elements.
