Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Barbora Krejcikova from Czechia have progressed to the next round at the Cincinnati Open. They secured a victory against the fourth-seeded pair of Cristina Bucsa from Spain and Nicole Melichar-Martinez from the USA with a score of 6-3, 1-6, 10-4 in the Round of 32 of the women’s doubles event on Monday, after a match lasting one hour and 33 minutes.
This tournament marks the first time Dabrowski and Krejcikova have teamed up. Their next opponents in the Round of 16, set for Tuesday, will be the unseeded Czech pair of Linda Noskova and Marie Bouzkova.
In a separate match on Monday night, Leylah Fernandez from Laval, Quebec, and her partner Sara Errani from Italy defeated Tamara Korpatsch from Germany and British player Emily Webley-Smith in a match lasting one hour and 29 minutes with a score of 6-2, 7-6 (2). The first set was claimed by the Canadian-Italian duo in 31 minutes, but Korpatsch and Webley-Smith staged a comeback in the second set, leading 6-5 and serving for the win before ultimately falling short.
Fernandez and Errani recorded two aces, 23 winners, one double fault, and only nine of the total 34 unforced errors in the match. Their upcoming opponents in the Round of 16 are Chan Hao-ching from Taiwan and Maya Joint from Australia.
Fernandez had previously been eliminated by Xiyu Wang from China in the second round of the women’s singles competition on Sunday.
