Balsam fir trees in New Brunswick are facing a concerning situation as they are turning red and perishing due to the severe drought experienced last summer. This phenomenon is alarming for the future of these iconic provincial trees.
Professor Anthony Taylor, a forestry researcher at the University of New Brunswick, has been closely monitoring the situation. He has observed firsthand the distress among woodlot owners as the vibrant evergreen trees, often sought after for Christmas decorations, gradually transform into a red, parched state before succumbing to death.
According to Prof. Taylor, the current trend aligns with previous instances following similarly hot and dry summers. He emphasized that the warm, arid conditions, such as the drought encountered last year, significantly hinder the growth capacity of balsam fir trees.
Over the years, Taylor has been dedicated to studying the impact of climate change on New Brunswick’s forests. He noted that previous balsam fir die-offs have been linked to abnormally hot and dry summers in 1986 and 2018.
In response to drought stress, the trees halt their photosynthesis process prematurely, impeding their growth potential. This disruption leads to a deficiency in energy reserves required for essential metabolic functions and defense mechanisms, as explained by Taylor.
Additionally, the shallow root system of the balsam firs poses challenges in accessing water during dry periods, exacerbating their vulnerability.
Peter McKeil, a woodlot owner in Burtt’s Corner, noticed the balsam firs on his property exhibiting signs of distress since June. The trees are progressively turning red from the lower branches upwards, indicating ongoing damage. McKeil has already lost approximately 100 trees and is adapting his harvesting practices to salvage value from the remaining fir trees.
Expressing concern for the future, McKeil believes that with the escalating impacts of climate change, the balsam fir species is facing a grim fate, particularly in southern New Brunswick.
