The recent Louvre heist continues to create a buzz on social media as people remain astonished by the audacity of the robbery. This cinematic-like crime saw French thieves successfully abscond with eight crown jewels valued at approximately €88 million (£77 million) in a mere seven minutes.
Surprisingly, it has been revealed that the heist was made possible by exploiting a major vulnerability in the Louvre’s security system. Shockingly, reports from the French publication Libération disclosed that the renowned museum had safeguarded its security systems using the password ‘LOUVRE.’
In 2014, the French National Cybersecurity Agency (ANSSI) conducted security assessments at the Louvre and flagged the weak password, recommending the implementation of a more robust security measure.
Online reactions were swift, with individuals poking fun at the situation. Some quipped about the simplicity of the password, highlighting the irony of stringent password requirements for mundane tasks compared to the lax security measures for protecting valuable artifacts at the Louvre.
Following the investigation, it was revealed that one of the apprehended suspects, a social media personality with a fascination for motorcycles who also worked as a security guard at the Pompidou center, played a role in the heist.
Abdoulaye N, a 39-year-old man from Aubervilliers, was arrested on charges of organized theft and criminal conspiracy in connection to the crown jewels theft. Additionally, four suspects, including three believed to be part of the gang that executed the heist using a stolen truck and specialized equipment, are currently in custody.
