A tragic incident unfolded as a married couple, Linda and Gary Lightfoot, were found deceased after becoming disoriented on their way home from a Thanksgiving gathering in Lubbock, Texas. The 81-year-old Linda and her 82-year-old husband Gary, who had made the journey from Panhandle, Texas numerous times before, somehow lost their way this time.
Their bodies were discovered on a ranch in Quay County, New Mexico, five days after they left the family celebration. The police found them following a report about a potential sighting of their vehicle. According to a relative, Barbara Scheller, the Lightfoots, who left their phone at home, likely took a wrong turn while navigating the familiar route.
The Quay County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the unfortunate news, stating that both individuals were found deceased at the location. The autopsy reports, detailing the cause and manner of their deaths, are expected to be finalized in about three months.
Although the distance between Panhandle and Quay County can be covered in approximately two-and-a-half hours, the couple’s final journey took them through Route 40 west via Amarillo, adding to their confusion. The family fondly remembers Linda and Gary as compassionate individuals who left behind a legacy of love and dedication. Gary, a military veteran and former law enforcement officer, was also known for his skill in woodworking.
Linda, who had a career in the oil and gas industry and banking in Abilene, Texas, was described as someone who cherished every day, regardless of the circumstances. The couple, known for their kindness towards others, is survived by their son Gregg, Linda’s sister Barbara, Barbara’s husband Waylon, as well as nieces and nephews.
Acknowledging the efforts of the search teams and stressing the importance of preparedness while traveling, the family expressed gratitude for the support received during this difficult time.
