England cricket legend Robin Smith dies at 62

Date:

England cricket icon Robin Smith has passed away at the age of 62. The renowned batsman, who represented his country in 62 Test matches, died in Australia where he had traveled for the Ashes series.

The sad news was disclosed by Smith’s close associate and former teammate Kevan James during an emotional interview on BBC Radio Solent. Smith had been battling health issues, including struggles with alcoholism and depression. The exact cause of his death remains undisclosed.

During his visit to the first Ashes Test in Perth last week, Smith reunited with former England teammates Graham Gooch, David Gower, and Allan Lamb. Known as ‘The Judge’, Smith, a stylish and fearless right-handed batsman, made his Test debut against the West Indies in 1988, despite being born in South Africa. He notably scored two centuries during the subsequent Ashes series.

Smith’s highest Test score of 175 came in response to Brian Lara’s then-record-breaking 375 in Antigua. His Test career concluded with 4,236 runs at an average of 43.67, including nine centuries. Additionally, he played in 71 one-day internationals and was part of the England squad that reached the World Cup final in 1992.

Although he did not feature for England after 1996, Smith continued playing for Hampshire until 2003, amassing 21 seasons with the club. Despite his cricketing success, he faced personal challenges post-retirement, battling alcoholism and depression, which led to hospitalization on multiple occasions.

In a recent interview with The Times, Smith candidly discussed his struggles with alcohol, revealing moments of relapse and the impact on his health. He emphasized the importance of seeking help and open communication in dealing with mental health issues.

Robin Smith’s passing marks the end of an era for English cricket, leaving behind a legacy as one of Hampshire’s finest players. His dedication to the sport and turbulent personal journey will be remembered by fans and peers alike.
