England Fumes Over Umpiring Blunder in Ashes Test

Date:

England expressed frustration following a mistake that allowed Alex Carey to avoid being dismissed for an edge behind at the Adelaide Oval. Carey scored a crucial 106 runs as Australia ended day one of the third Ashes Test at 326-8, despite a contentious moment when he should have been out on 72.

The Australian wicket-keeper seemed to have edged a delivery from Josh Tongue to Jamie Smith when Australia was at 245-6. England appealed, but the on-field umpire, Ahsan Raza, ruled it not out, leading Ben Stokes to request a review. The replay displayed a spike on the ‘Snicko’ technology, indicating possible contact with the bat. However, the spike appeared before the ball actually hit the bat, resulting in the TV umpire, Chris Gaffaney, sticking with the initial decision.

England was puzzled and angered by the decision, especially given a similar incident in the first Test, where Jamie Smith was given out despite the spike occurring after the ball passed the bat and gloves. It was revealed that the error was due to the technology operator mistakenly using the wrong stump mic audio.

BBG Sports took responsibility for the mistake, acknowledging that the incorrect audio selection led to the misinterpretation of the incident. Alex Carey, who admitted to hitting the ball, faced criticism from England supporters for a past controversial incident and further scrutiny for his post-match comments.

Carey remarked on the incident, stating that he heard a noise as the ball passed the bat, but acknowledged the unusual timing of the sound on replay. He attributed his escape to luck and acknowledged that sometimes things go in a player’s favor in cricket.

England’s bowling coach, David Saker, hinted at potential complaints to match referee Jeff Crowe regarding the ongoing concerns with the ‘Snicko’ technology not aligning with TV visuals throughout the series. The incident caused confusion among fans and commentators, with former England captain Michael Vaughan expressing surprise at the spike on ‘Snicko’ before the ball reached the bat.
