In the correspondence, Epstein suggested that Putin seek insights from him, referencing the late Russian UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin’s prior interactions. Churkin, a respected figure, had passed away a year earlier. Jagland expressed willingness to discuss Epstein’s proposal with Lavrov’s assistant.
Prior to Trump’s meeting with Putin in Helsinki, Epstein strived to arrange a meeting with Lavrov. Subsequently, he criticized Trump’s performance at the summit, labeling it as subpar. Epstein’s views on Trump’s diplomatic approach were shared in email exchanges with former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, where Epstein expressed doubts about Trump’s understanding of the situation.
