A search operation is currently in progress for a hang glider who has gone missing in a popular tourist area, leaving authorities puzzled. The individual, a 59-year-old experienced hang glider pilot, vanished yesterday afternoon in the New South Wales Mid North Coast region of Australia. The incident occurred shortly after takeoff from Lindeman’s Point, approximately 129km south of Port Macquarie, near Forster.
The missing man, a local resident, reportedly lost altitude during his glide. Another glider who took off after him witnessed the incident and reported the disappearance around 4 pm yesterday. Fortunately, the second glider landed safely after the incident.
The search area includes the scenic Booti Booti National Park, known for its stunning beaches and challenging hiking trails. The picturesque Elizabeth Beach has now become a focal point for search efforts.
Marine Rescue Forster Tuncurry, along with volunteers, deployed rescue vessel Forster 30 to search the waters from Seven Mile Beach to Elizabeth Beach until late yesterday, with the search continuing today. Inspector Courtney Greenslade of Marine Rescue NSW mentioned that adverse weather conditions have hindered search efforts, leading the crew to temporarily halt operations for the day.
Inspector Greenslade stated that the rescue team conducted a thorough search from Lindeman Cove to Blueys Head with the assistance of Water Police. Despite facing challenges, the volunteers remain on standby to support further search operations if requested by the NSW Police Marine Area Command.
Inspector David Coyle of Manning Great Lakes Police District described the incident as unexpected, emphasizing the missing man’s extensive experience in hang gliding. Graeme Cran, a paraglider with Mid North Coast Flyers, highlighted the potential risks involved in aviation sports, emphasizing the importance of preparedness for emergency situations.
