“Expert Traveler Warns: Avoid Overrated Euro Cities”

Date:

A seasoned traveler and frequent flyer has issued a cautionary message advising against visiting three destinations where locals may not be welcoming and food prices could be exorbitant.

Francis Hellyer, the CEO of tickadoo, who claims to have extensively traveled across Europe, shared his viewpoint on cities that he considers overrated and best avoided. He specifically mentioned three popular cities that attract millions of tourists annually.

According to Francis, these destinations may not offer the best experience, exemplified by scenarios like paying €15 for subpar coffee amidst crowds at iconic landmarks. He expressed dissatisfaction with the negative attitudes of locals, unpleasant metro conditions, and personal experiences at specific locations like Gare du Nord.

Paris, known as the City of Love, saw a record high of 48.7 million visitors in 2024, surpassing the previous year’s figure of 47.5 million, indicating a significant post-pandemic rebound in tourism.

Criticism of Paris is not new, with the phenomenon of Paris Syndrome affecting some Japanese visitors due to a stark contrast between idealized expectations and the reality of the city. Similarly, discontent with Parisian experiences has been voiced by dissatisfied tourists, citing rude behavior, mediocre food quality, and comparisons with other cities like London.

Regarding Venice, Francis likened the summer atmosphere to a theme park crowded with pigeons, echoing sentiments shared by a protest page on Instagram titled ‘Venice is not Disneyland,’ which highlights inappropriate behavior by tourists and locals alike.

Amsterdam, a popular destination in Europe, has faced criticism from Francis for being synonymous with stag parties and overpriced snacks. Despite its allure with world-class attractions, serene canals, and cultural offerings, the city has grappled with issues of overtourism and negative behaviors from visitors.

In response to these challenges, Amsterdam authorities have implemented measures to regulate tourist activities, including banning cruise ships from certain areas and launching campaigns to deter specific demographics from engaging in undesirable behaviors.

While Francis may not favor some renowned European cities, there are others that he appreciates. These cities, which offer unique and positive experiences, stand out amidst the evolving landscape of travel and tourism.
