Fire TV Stick users are being urged to exercise caution as a popular tool called “Downloader” has been removed from Amazon’s Appstore, paving the way for a fraudulent copycat app aiming to defraud users. The original tool vanished from the online marketplace over the weekend, leaving users vulnerable.
Downloader, which has been accessible for nearly ten years, enabled Fire TV owners to search for and install apps not officially available on mainstream platforms, granting access to additional tools and applications that might be restricted in certain regions or unreleased versions of software.
Despite its widespread usage, the app faced a temporary suspension due to a recent update that classified it as a full web browser, breaching Amazon’s policy against third-party browsers on Fire TV devices. The developer, Elias Saba, disclosed this issue and has rectified it in the v2.0.2 update by removing the browser designation, awaiting Amazon’s approval for reinstatement on the Appstore.
During this period, users are cautioned against a fake version of Downloader circulating, aiming to deceive Fire TV owners by tricking them into paying a weekly fee. Saba advises users not to install the fraudulent app and to report it to Amazon if encountered.
For users with the authentic Downloader already installed, it is recommended not to uninstall it, as reinstallation will be impossible until Amazon reapproves it. Additionally, disabling Auto Offload is advised to prevent automatic removal of the app by the device.
Pending Amazon’s approval of the rectification, Downloader may make a comeback on Fire TV units later in the week, necessitating users to monitor the situation closely for updates.
