Family of Four Dies in Istanbul Hotel Pesticide Tragedy

Date:

A tragic incident unfolded during a family vacation in Istanbul, Turkey, where a family of four, including two children, lost their lives due to exposure to a pesticide used for bed bug extermination in their hotel room.

The family, hailing from Germany, had arrived in Istanbul on November 9 for their holiday but fell ill just two days later. The victims were identified as Cigdem Bocek, 27, her husband Servet, 38, and their children Masal, three, and Kadir Muhammet, six.

In a desperate attempt to seek help, the father hailed a taxi to rush his family to the nearest hospital as the situation deteriorated rapidly. Tragically, the family succumbed to the poisoning in their hotel room and were pronounced dead.

Initially, authorities suspected food poisoning from local street food, but the investigation took a turn with the arrest of 11 individuals, including hotel staff. The lethal chemical, aluminium phosphide, used in bed bug treatment in a nearby room, is believed to have caused their poisoning through a ventilation shaft.

Aluminium phosphide, a commonly used pesticide, can be fatal if inhaled in high concentrations. Further investigations revealed lapses in certification among the pest control firm workers involved in the hotel’s treatment process.

CCTV footage captured the family checking into the hotel and later being rushed to the hospital after experiencing symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. Despite efforts, Cigdem and the children tragically passed away, while Servet lost his battle after days in intensive care.

The hotel was evacuated, and authorities collected samples for testing, including from items like bedsheets and water bottles. Seven individuals, including street food vendors, were detained for questioning, and food samples are under examination.

Additionally, personal items from other guests admitted to the hospital with suspected poisoning were seized for investigation. A grieving family member vowed to seek justice and hold accountable those responsible for the tragedy.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan assured that thorough investigations would be conducted to determine the cause of the family’s untimely deaths.
