Nigel Farage’s proposal to establish temporary prisons for serious offenders has faced strong criticism.
Justice minister Jake Richards, in an interview with The Mirror, expressed disappointment in the Reform leader for not presenting viable solutions to the current prison crisis.
While visiting HMP Feltham in West London, Mr. Richards dismissed Mr. Farage’s plan to allocate £5 billion towards constructing new ‘Nightingale’ prisons. He pointed out that Reform’s approach seemed to advocate for temporary prison facilities, which he argued could pose risks by housing serious offenders in close proximity to communities.
In July, Mr. Farage had outlined a plan to build five low-security prisons on Ministry of Defence (MOD) land if his party gained power, aiming to provide 12,400 spaces for “lower category offenders.”
Mr. Richards highlighted the challenges faced by the Labour party in addressing prison overcrowding, emphasizing the tough decisions required to manage the situation. He noted that during the Conservative government’s tenure, the prison system had 88,818 places occupied by 87,726 inmates, illustrating the strain on the system.
Reflecting on the past governance, Mr. Richards indicated public dissatisfaction with the Tories, attributing their decline to mismanagement in various sectors, particularly evident in the state of prisons and criminal justice. He emphasized the need for the government to take decisive actions to rectify the issues.
