A father who alerted law enforcement about his own son unwittingly exposed his alleged mistreatment when authorities uncovered disturbing details.
Thomas Barker, aged 44, faces charges for mistreating a child after contacting the police to report his 11-year-old boy’s disobedience and his frustration with the lack of compliance. However, the situation turned against him when officers arrived at his residence.
In a statement released by the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office on social media, it was revealed that Barker was the actual instigator of the issue, allegedly making threats towards a child who asked for food.
The child informed deputies that when requesting something to eat, Barker responded with aggressive language, escalating to violent threats. Reportedly, this disturbing incident was recorded on video evidence provided to the sheriff’s office.
Furthermore, Barker demonstrated a shocking lack of care for his son’s well-being, telling the child that he would not assist even in dire situations. The documented conversation indicated his disturbing responses, including a callous remark about pouring gasoline on his son if he were on fire.
Sheriff Leroy Ravenell commented on the situation, drawing parallels to a biblical reference, emphasizing the severe neglect the child endured. Following the incident, the child was relocated to a family member’s care, as reported by Wis TV station.
This incident comes in the wake of another case where a father faced charges of child torture and aggravated child abuse after subjecting his three young children, aged two, four, and eight, to a challenging hike through rugged terrain.
Distressing footage captured during the hike showed the father, Micah Smith, pushing his children beyond their limits, with his daughter expressing fear of freezing to death in the harsh conditions.
What initially seemed like a harmless outing quickly turned perilous, with the children ill-prepared for the harsh elements and pleading with their father to turn back. The indictment highlighted the father’s disregard for his children’s safety, opting to continue the hike despite their distress.
