Three individuals lost their lives in a fiery crash when a cargo aircraft went down during takeoff, leading to additional devastation on the ground. The UPS freight plane, after veering off the runway, ignited into flames, causing nearby businesses near Louisville International Airport to be engulfed in fire. Among the affected establishments were Grade A Autoparts and Kentucky Petroleum Recycling, both directly hit by the plane.
The tragic incident has claimed at least seven lives so far, with authorities anticipating more casualties. Governor Andy Beshear highlighted the severity of injuries sustained, describing some as “very significant.” An investigation is now in progress as officials work to reconstruct the final moments before the catastrophic event unfolded.
Footage, though unverified, depicts UPS Flight 2976, carrying 38,000 gallons of fuel, already engulfed in flames before skidding off the runway. Aviation attorney Pablo Rojas noted the aircraft’s struggle to gain altitude as a fire tore through its left side near one of its engines. Given the substantial fuel load onboard the 34-year-old plane, Rojas emphasized the potential for an explosion or rapid spread of flames once the fire initiated.
Witnesses on the ground, such as Louisville resident Justin Dunn, described the horrifying scenes, mentioning debris falling up to 10 miles away from the crash site. Another witness, New Albany resident Katie Didit, recalled hearing a massive explosion while driving, initially mistaking it for a building fire. She captured the swift change in the sky on video, noting how darkness enveloped downtown within minutes.
Kentucky Truck Parts & Service shared their account on Facebook, revealing the proximity of the crash to their business and the damage inflicted on neighboring properties. UPS issued a statement expressing deep sadness over the accident and their commitment to safety and cooperation with investigative authorities.
