“Find Affordable Christmas Markets in Europe for Festive Getaways”

Date:

As the holiday season approaches, many people enjoy immersing themselves in the festive atmosphere with a warm glass of mulled wine at a European Christmas market. However, these markets can often be expensive experiences.

For instance, indulging in a cup of mulled wine at the Berlin Christmas market may cost you five euros, with an additional three euros if you wish to keep the souvenir mug. Even staying closer to home does not guarantee savings, as UK Christmas markets are known for their higher prices compared to other European markets.

Consider the Manchester Christmas markets, where a beer and a bratwurst could set you back around £25 this year. If you are looking to plan a festive getaway without breaking the bank, exploring some of the lesser-known European Christmas markets can offer more affordable options. These markets are not only budget-friendly but also tend to be less crowded than their UK counterparts.

Eurochange has compiled a list of alternative Christmas markets across Europe, highlighting the best options for travelers seeking cost-effective choices. Laura Evans-Fisk, from Eurochange, recommends the Christmas market in Wroclaw, Poland, as a top destination for excellent value and an authentic experience. Accommodation for two adults for two nights costs just £47, and prices for food and drinks are very reasonable. Sibiu in Romania is another affordable option, offering mulled wine for just 86p.

Described as Romania’s premier Christmas market, Sibiu surpasses even Bucharest in attracting crowds during ‘The Fair In Sibiu’ winter celebration from November 14, 2025, to January 4, 2026. The town’s unique blend of Hungarian, Romanian, and German influences creates a culturally rich experience at the historic old town markets, adorned with thousands of festive lights and decorations.

Wroclaw in Poland is also praised for its charming and picturesque Christmas markets, spread throughout the city across various locations. Vendors offer handcrafted items and local delicacies, showcasing the talents of independent traders. Mulled wine in Wroclaw is priced at 15 PLN (£3.08) with a 15 PLN mug deposit, or visitors can opt for cheaper options at nearby establishments.

Innsbruck, with its festive ambiance and delicious treats like Kiachln, provides a magical setting for Christmas markets. The city’s medieval streets adorned with fairy lights lead to the markets near the Golden Roof, offering a wide array of snacks and crafts. Tallinn Christmas market in Estonia is hailed as a fairytale experience, featuring local specialties and affordable festive drinks.

Zagreb’s Christmas market, known as ‘Advent Zagreb,’ transforms the city with a vibrant atmosphere during the holiday season. The market, along with music events, art exhibitions, and an ice-skating rink, adds to the festive spirit in King Tomislav Square.
