“Fleetwood and Rai to Face Off in Abu Dhabi Playoff”

Date:

The 2025 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship has reached a playoff stage, with Tommy Fleetwood and Aaron Rai set to compete after both finished with a tournament record 25-under total. Rory McIlroy narrowly missed out on joining the leaders, finishing just one shot behind at the Yas Links Golf Course.

Following their arrival at the playoff, Fleetwood and Rai, who have previously faced off in a DP World Tour playoff, were congratulated by McIlroy. The Northern Irishman commended their performances and exchanged handshakes with Fleetwood.

In a previous encounter at the 2020 Scottish Open, Rai emerged victorious over Fleetwood by securing a par on the first extra playoff hole while Fleetwood faltered with a bogey.

McIlroy expressed feeling pressure before being eliminated from the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. The five-time Major winner admitted to struggling with patience over the weekend as Rai set the pace during the tournament.

Reflecting on his performance, McIlroy acknowledged his missed opportunities during the competition. Despite feeling that he played well, McIlroy found himself trailing behind Rai and Fleetwood who excelled throughout the tournament.

On the other hand, Rai and Fleetwood embraced the opportunity to compete against a golf legend. Ranked 30th in the world and a previous winner of the Wyndham Championship, Rai emphasized the significance of the event on the DP World Tour and expressed determination to give their best effort.

Fleetwood, also quoted by the Irish Examiner, highlighted the importance of patience during the competition. He praised Rai’s exceptional performance and recognized the competitive environment among the top players.

In other news, Sky has introduced a discounted Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle ahead of the 2025/26 season, offering savings and access to over 1,400 live matches across various leagues, including the Premier League and EFL.
