“Former Winnipeg Mayor Urges More Female Representation in Politics”

Date:

Susan Thompson, who served as Winnipeg’s first female mayor, expresses concern over the lack of female representation in mayoral positions since her term. Thompson emphasizes the need for more women to step forward in politics, as currently, none of the 11 registered candidates for the upcoming October mayoral election in Winnipeg are women.

Thompson highlights the gender imbalance in political leadership, noting that despite making up half of Winnipeg’s population, women hold only 37% of council seats. Kelly Saunders, a political science professor, explains that systemic barriers hinder women’s participation in Canadian politics, leading to underrepresentation in elected positions.

Saunders acknowledges the challenges women face in politics, including harassment and personal attacks. These obstacles contribute to the reluctance of women to run for office, as the political arena can be hostile, especially towards women and gender-diverse individuals.

Despite the barriers, Saunders observes a growing interest among young women in political science classes. Thompson, recalling her experience in politics, emphasizes the importance of integrity and leadership while denouncing bad behavior in the political sphere.

In Brandon, Manitoba, the lack of female representation extends to the mayoral race, with no women currently on the ballot. Tracy Baker, advocating for gender diversity in municipal politics through “Her Seat at the Table,” emphasizes the importance of women’s voices in governance.

Kathy Valentino, president of the Association of Manitoba Municipalities, encourages individuals from diverse backgrounds to participate in local politics. Valentino stresses the importance of varied perspectives in decision-making processes to create a healthy and inclusive municipal environment.

Thompson urges the community to identify and support potential female candidates for political roles, emphasizing the need for collective encouragement in fostering gender equality in political leadership.
