Geely Targets UK Market with Electric Vehicles

Date:

Car manufacturer Geely, a prominent Chinese brand, has set its sights on British consumers and hinted at the possibility of manufacturing vehicles in the UK. Although not widely recognized on British roads, Geely holds stakes in Volvo, Lotus, and LEVC. Geely has ambitious plans to introduce 10 electric and plug-in hybrid models in the UK within the next three years, aiming to achieve annual sales of 100,000 cars.

The first offering in the UK market is the EX5, an all-electric luxury sports utility vehicle. Positioned as a competitor to Tesla’s Model Y, the Geely EX5 starts at just under £32,000, significantly lower than Tesla’s flagship model priced at around £45,000. Geely also provides an EV Grant of up to £3,750 towards the purchase of the EX5.

The influx of Chinese car manufacturers into the UK market is driven by the increasing demand for electric vehicles and the absence of import tariffs. Over 10 Chinese car brands are currently available in the UK, posing a significant challenge to traditional manufacturers from Europe and other regions.

Statistics from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders reveal that Chinese companies accounted for 12% of all new car sales in the UK last month. MG, a renowned British brand now under Chinese ownership, outperformed established brands like Renault and Tesla by selling 14,577 cars in September.

Another Chinese automaker, BYD, experienced an astounding 880% sales surge year-on-year in the UK market, selling 11,271 cars last month compared to 1,150 in the same period the previous year. This sales performance surpassed that of Honda, Citroen, and Fiat combined.

According to Autotrader, MG dominated the list of most searched-for new electric cars this month, with the S5 model leading the rankings.

Geely’s UK head, Michael Yang, expressed openness to utilizing existing Lotus and LEVC factories in the UK for manufacturing Geely vehicles. The UK government is reportedly eager to attract Chinese car manufacturers to establish production facilities in the country to stimulate investment and job creation, drawing parallels to the influx of Japanese automakers in the past.

However, concerns have been raised about the increasing influence of Beijing in the UK amid accusations of prioritizing economic ties with China. Recent events, including dropped spying charges against individuals denying wrongdoing, have sparked debates about the UK’s relationship with China.
