A massive huntsman spider was found in a shipment of bananas at a school in Ramsey, near Huntingdon, Cambs. The bananas had traveled approximately 3,200 miles from the Ivory Coast. Experts believe the spider to be a Barylestis spp, a fast and aggressive member of the Huntsman family.
Despite their intimidating appearance, Huntsman spiders pose little threat to humans due to their mild venom. Chris Newman, from the National Centre for Reptile Welfare, identified the spider as a likely huntsman from the Ivory Coast.
Local residents expressed mixed reactions to the discovery. Some, like Andy Pierce, emphasized the importance of carefully inspecting produce, while others like Hazel Ross expressed fear and a desire to avoid bananas altogether. The incident prompted varied responses, with some individuals jokingly acknowledging their cautious shopping habits in light of the spider encounter.
In the midst of the reactions, one individual humorously shared how their vigilance in checking fruits made them appear eccentric to their spouse. This incident has sparked conversations about spider encounters in unexpected places, prompting some to reconsider their dietary choices.
