“Graphic Journalist and Daughter Shine in Whistling Competition”

Date:

Ben Shannon, a graphic journalist at CBC and a proud father living in Toronto, shared his experience participating in the Masters of Musical Whistling competition with his daughter Sumire. The journey began when Shannon, inspired by a contestant on a quiz show, decided to sign up for the competition after discovering it online. Initially not taking it seriously, Shannon saw it as a fun activity to bond with his daughter during the pandemic.

Both Shannon and Sumire, proficient whistlers, embarked on a training regimen after being accepted into the competition. With coaching from Carole Anne Kaufman, known as the Whistling Diva, they realized the seriousness of the contest and dedicated themselves to practicing diligently.

The competition, held in Los Angeles, showcased talented whistlers from around the world. Shannon and Sumire impressed the audience with their performances, earning silver and gold medals in their respective categories. Shannon reflected on the experience, acknowledging the shift from his past ironic demeanor to genuinely caring about something and embracing the joy of earnest dedication.

The event highlighted the transformative power of stepping out of one’s comfort zone and wholeheartedly pursuing a passion. Shannon’s journey illustrated the importance of letting go of inhibitions to discover genuine fulfillment in pursuing what truly matters.
