Webster, a great white shark, has been observed off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, indicating a positive trend in the region’s ocean health, as per findings by a research organization monitoring shark movements in the Atlantic. Ocearch, a global non-profit supporting shark research, has documented multiple great white shark sightings near Newfoundland in recent times, including Webster, a 12-foot, 1,000-pound shark frequently spotted around the beaches in Cow Head.
Chris Fischer, the founder of Ocearch, mentioned that these white sharks revisit specific locations and seal colonies in Newfoundland annually for feeding purposes, with sightings extending to the northernmost parts of the region. Other great whites, Dold and Monomoy, have also been identified and tracked in Newfoundland waters over the years.
Despite the potential fear associated with great white sharks, Fischer emphasized the positive implications of their presence. He highlighted the significant decline in the global great white shark population from the 1970s to the 1990s, which prompted conservation efforts to protect the remaining population, estimated to be around nine percent of its former size. Fischer noted that the return of sharks to the area is beneficial for local fisheries, as sharks play a crucial role in regulating seal populations, thereby indirectly safeguarding fish stocks.
Caroline Miri, a marine biologist at Fisheries and Oceans Canada, underscored the essential ecological role sharks play at the apex of the marine food chain, aiding in maintaining ecosystem balance by controlling invasive species and managing lower-level fish populations. Ocearch has tagged approximately 115 sharks across the Atlantic, from Florida to Newfoundland and Labrador, with Webster initially tagged in September 2025 in Nova Scotia and last tracked near Cow Head on August 7.
Fischer reassured that encountering sharks like Webster should not cause undue concern as long as safety precautions are observed, encouraging people to enjoy the ocean responsibly. The resurgence of white sharks in Newfoundland waters signals a positive shift in oceanic abundance, reflecting successful fisheries management efforts.
