Emergency crews are responding to a “gas explosion” in a Nottinghamshire town, the fire service has said. Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service received its first report about the incident in John Street, Worksop, at 7.39pm on Saturday.

The service said it was working with emergency services from nearby Derbyshire to respond to the incident. It added: “This is a gas explosion involving a house that has been significantly damaged.” John Street has been closed as crews work through the night.

Images circulated on social media appear to show a destroyed terraced house, and people have reported hearing a loud bang. The entire length of the house looks to have been wrecked, with bricks covering part of the street in front, in a video of the scene shared on Facebook.

Residents reported seeing “smoke” over Worksop and hearing a “loud explosion”. “Anyone else just hear/see that loud explosion and smoke over Worksop?” one person wrote on Facebook.

Another user posted at about 8.10pm: “I was driving back from Mass this evening, just turned into Gladstone Street from Gateford Road, when there was a terrific bang, like a very loud firework! I thought the back end had blown off my car. A house in John Street has had, presumably, a gas explosion!”

In a statement, police said a house was partly destroyed and there was damage to adjoining properties. Local residents have also been evacuated. There are no reported injuries at this time.

Chief Inspector Neil Humphries, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This is major incident and emergency services will remain at the scene throughout the night. Multiple properties have been evacuated as we work with our partners to respond to this incident and understand how it happened.”

Images show the street covered in debris and a severely damaged house. One video shows a blue of grey-black smoke rising from the ruins of a house.

One person commented saying their house “shook”, while another said they were “freaked out”. Another persons said: “It shook the whole house i thought someone had drove into to my front room.”

Police also said: “We are currently at the scene of an explosion in Worksop. Emergency services were called to John Street at 7.39pm after an explosion inside a house. The terraced property has been partially destroyed, with damage also reported to adjoining properties.

“Multiple houses in and around John Street have been evacuated as emergency crews work to account for all local residents. Several nearby roads have been closed and people are advised to avoid the area.”
