The Premier League have confirmed that semi-automated offside technology determined a goal from Chris Wood should not stand in Monday night’s meeting between Tottenham and Nottingham Forest.
Forest were already a goal to the good when Wood thought he had added a second. But while the goal was originally given in-play, VAR overruled the decision after watching the incident back.
The Premier League confirmed the reasons for the overruled, saying: “VAR checked the referee’s call of goal – and established that Wood was in an offside position and recommended that the goal was disallowed.”
Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith commentating for Sky Sports said: “Chris Wood is just on the last line of the defence and he is off. It was a beautiful pass into him by Elliot Anderson, played with real whip. Any centre forward would love that type of pass.”
Fortunately for Wood – and Forest – the New Zealand star had the ball in the back of the net again just minutes later, this time with no question of offside.
