Today marks a special day for fans of the much-loved drama Heartstopper, as it celebrates its third anniversary since first gracing screens on 22nd April in 2022.
Based on Alice Oseman’s graphic novels, the Netflix series has already unleashed three heartfelt seasons, culminating in the latest which premiered in October last year.
The series has easily captivated viewers with its poignant coming-of-age story that follows Charlie Spring (played by Joe Locke), who strikes up an unexpected friendship and eventually finds romance with Nick Nelson (Kit Connor), reports the Mirror US.
Throughout the past three years, we’ve seen Charlie and Nick’s tender relationship flourish, reaching emotional heights in the most recent season as they exchange heartfelt ‘I love yous.’
Despite nearing six months since fans were last treated to new episodes, Netflix had remained silent on whether a fourth season is on the horizon. However, the streamer has just announced that the drama will return with a final feature film, wrapping up the story.
Avid viewers will remember that Nick and Charlie were navigating moving away to university, and the upcoming movie will conclude that storyline.
The streamer’s synopsis teases: “Nick and Charlie are inseparable, but with Nick preparing to leave for university and Charlie finding new independence at school, the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to weigh on them. Doubts take hold, and their relationship faces its biggest challenge yet.
“Meanwhile, their friends are also navigating the ups and downs of love and friendship, confronting the bittersweet challenges of growing up and moving on. Can first loves really last forever?”
Just hours before the announcement, viewers had been pleading for a fourth season on social media.
On X (formerly Twitter), a fan expressed their admiration for the series, writing: “3 years since Heartstopper released. The show changes people’s lives. This show is so special and important! Thank you Alice [Oseman] for bringing this beautiful story to the screen. Now @NetflixUK get your s*** together and renew Heartstopper for a final season.”
Another echoed the sentiment, urging: “Hey @Netflix today is a beautiful day to renew Heartstopper for its final season!!!!”
A third TV buff joined in, saying: “3 years and still not over this show, pls give us a 4th season Netflix,” while another exclaimed: “@Netflix @NetflixUK RENEW HEARTSTOPPER SEASON 4 DO IT NOW PLEASE we’re all begging.”
And a fifth enthusiast shared a gif of Nick and Charlie kissing, captioning it with a heartfelt appeal: “I really really hope this is not their last kiss we’ve seen on the screen of the show (@NetflixUK)!!!”
Fortunately for viewers, the duo’s story will receive a neat conclusion. Reflecting on the news, Oseman said: “I am completely overjoyed that we will get to tell the end of the Heartstopper story.
