“Inquest Launched After 5-Year-Old’s Tragic Death”

Date:

An inquiry has been initiated following the unexpected passing of a five-year-old girl at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff on September 27 last year.

The inquest, held at Swansea’s Guildhall, aims to determine if prompter medical intervention could have been administered to Aria Rose George, who was not known to have any pre-existing medical conditions until she fell ill.

Aria became unwell during the week commencing September 23, 2024. Initially seen by her general practitioner and subsequently at Neath Port Talbot Hospital, she underwent treatment and received medication before being discharged home.

Despite medical attention, Aria’s health did not improve. Her parents sought further care, leading to her transfer to the University Hospital of Wales for diagnostic imaging. Medical assessments revealed a global intracerebral bleed with hydrocephalus and pulmonary emboli as indicated by a CT scan.

Subsequent evaluations, including consultations with specialists, pointed towards symptoms consistent with acute myeloid leukaemia. After deliberations involving various medical experts, Aria was transitioned to “supportive comfort care.” She spent her final moments receiving palliative support alongside her parents.

Tragically, Aria’s health deteriorated, and she was pronounced deceased at 1:38 pm on September 27, 2024, with the suspected causes being intracerebral hemorrhage (non-traumatic) and acute myeloid leukaemia.

Senior coroner Aled Gruffydd emphasized the importance of investigating if timelier interventions could have altered the outcome, highlighting the public interest in clarifying the circumstances surrounding her passing. The inquest was adjourned until April 29, 2026, with condolences extended to Aria’s family.

In remembrance of Aria’s affection for Spider-Man, her family requested attendees to wear “casual attire … with a splash of blue and red” at her funeral.
