A new progressive movement led by Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana has selected four potential names for their upcoming party. Members will have the opportunity to vote on these choices, including the temporary name “Your Party,” during the inaugural conference in Liverpool this weekend. The other options under consideration are “Our Party,” “Popular Alliance,” and “For the Many.”
Despite receiving numerous suggestions, certain names like the Left Party and the People’s Party were excluded following discussions with the Electoral Commission. The decision to launch initially without a name was met with criticism, but senior officials emphasized the importance of allowing supporters to have a say in the matter.
The party, which has faced internal conflicts since its inception, will also determine its leadership structure. Recent disputes, fundraising controversies, and the departure of two independent MPs, Adnan Hussain and Iqbal Mohamed, have marked the organization’s early challenges.
A party spokesperson, representing approximately 50,000 members, stated, “We are revolutionizing politics from the grassroots level, prioritizing community engagement over special interests. This weekend marks a historic moment as our members establish a new political party that is truly accountable to local communities.”
Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn expressed his enthusiasm for the party’s launch, emphasizing the importance of creating a member-driven platform for genuine political transformation. Zarah Sultana, who left Labour to become an independent MP, shared her anticipation for the founding conference of “Your Party,” emphasizing the collective effort to realize their socialist vision.
The conference’s success will be pivotal in determining if the fledgling party can overcome internal conflicts and power struggles to become a prominent force on the progressive spectrum. Additionally, the rising popularity of the Green Party, led by Zack Polanski, adds further complexity to the evolving political landscape.
