“Lost Village of Derwent Resurfaces in Haunting Spectacle”

Date:

In the past, Morris Cottrill reminisced about the once beautiful village of Derwent, now submerged under water, lamenting its transformation into a man-made landscape.

Derwent, along with Ashopton, picturesque villages in the Peak District, met their deliberate end on March 18, 1943, when massive torrents were released, causing their disappearance beneath the rising waters. As the flood engulfed the area, structures dating back to the 17th century vanished, leaving only the spire of St John and St James church peeking above the water.

The villages, teeming with history and vitality, were forcibly acquired by the Derwent Valley Water Board between 1935 and 1945, despite vehement protests from locals. The residents were relocated to Yorkshire Bridge, where new houses were built to accommodate them.

Decades later, during dry spells, remnants of Derwent and Ashopton resurface, drawing curious visitors to witness the ghostly remains. Charles Hanson, reflecting on the lost heritage, questioned the government’s decision to submerge these historic sites for water supply needs.

Besides the haunting allure of the sunken villages, tourists flock to Ladybower to witness a unique feature – a giant ‘plughole’ at the dam’s southern end. Recent footage of fishermen near the vortex stirred safety concerns, prompting warnings from Severn Trent Water about the potential dangers posed by the powerful suction.

As visitors explore the reservoir’s mysteries, the legacy of Derwent and Ashopton lives on, reminding us of the price paid for progress.
