Canada’s national police force announced on Monday the arrest of a 51-year-old individual for allegedly issuing death threats against Prime Minister Mark Carney. Marc-André Porlier from Montreal faces charges of making threats to cause harm or death, as stated in a news release by the RCMP. The threats were reportedly conveyed via email to various unidentified recipients, including a senator, as detailed in the press release.
The accused also allegedly targeted “all Canadian police officers,” as indicated in the official charge sheet. Porlier had previously been convicted of arson and vandalism for setting fire to a church in Toronto during 2017, confirmed by law enforcement officials to CBC News. He was under probation for those offenses, according to an RCMP spokesperson.
Porlier made a court appearance on Saturday, according to the news release. It is important to note that the charges against him remain unproven in court.
