A manhunt is underway for a prisoner who was mistakenly released from HMP Wandsworth. The incident occurred on October 29, just five days after a similar error at HMP Chelmsford involving a migrant sex offender.
The Metropolitan Police was notified by the Prison Service on November 4 that the prisoner had been released in error from HMP Wandsworth on October 29. The missing prisoner is a 24-year-old Algerian man, and authorities are conducting urgent inquiries to locate and apprehend him.
According to Sky News, the prisoner was serving a sentence for trespass with intent to steal, but he has a history of previous sexual offenses. This development follows the recent accidental release of Hadush Kebatu, another sex offender, from HMP Chelmsford.
In response to the Kebatu incident, David Lammy pledged to implement the most rigorous release checks ever put in place. An independent investigation, led by Dame Lynne Owens, has been launched to examine the circumstances surrounding Kebatu’s release.
Notably, in September 2023, a similar incident occurred when 23-year-old prisoner Daniel Khalife escaped from HMP Wandsworth. Khalife managed to flee by hiding under a food delivery lorry and was captured after three days approximately 14 miles away from the prison.
