Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev accidentally hit a spectator with a ball during his semifinal match against Novak Djokovic at the China Open in Beijing, leading to his disqualification from the tournament. The spectator, a male, was assisted from his seat with his left eye covered after being struck by the ball thrown by Medvedev in a moment of frustration.
Expressing remorse, Medvedev stated, “I feel terribly sorry for him actually, and I just hope he’s OK. Hopefully, I can meet him and make up for it somehow.” The incident occurred when Djokovic was serving for the match at 7-5, 5-3, and Medvedev, in an unintentional act, hit the ball into the stands out of frustration. Despite claiming it was an accident, Medvedev was disqualified from the match.
After striking the spectator, Medvedev showed immediate signs of apology by waving his hand. He then engaged with the chair umpire and tournament supervisor, accepting the consequences of his actions. Djokovic, who went on to win the match, expressed sympathy for both the spectator and Medvedev, drawing parallels to his own disqualification incident at the 2020 U.S. Open.
This disqualification added to Medvedev’s history of on-court behavior issues, including a past fine for unsportsmanlike conduct. Djokovic, on the other hand, continued his impressive record at the China Open, aiming for his seventh title by advancing to the final against Alex de Minaur.
The incident drew attention for its similarities to previous tennis controversies, emphasizing the need for sportsmanship and control during intense matches. Djokovic’s victory and Medvedev’s disqualification highlighted the unpredictable nature of competitive sports, leaving fans and players alike reflecting on the importance of composure and respect on the court.
