A 31-year-old mother has been taken into custody after her one-year-old son drowned in the bathtub. The tragic incident occurred when she allegedly left the child unattended in the water for nearly 15 minutes.
Courtney Marie Newsom faces charges of felony manslaughter for causing the child’s death recklessly, along with two counts of endangering the welfare of a minor in the third degree.
Emergency services responded to a call at the family residence on September 7, where they found Newsom attempting CPR on her son in the bathroom. Despite efforts to save him, the boy succumbed to the incident on September 13 after being rushed to a nearby hospital.
During initial questioning, Newsom stated that she briefly left the room while bathing her children and found her son unresponsive upon her return. However, in a subsequent interview with the Brookland Police Department, she revealed a different sequence of events.
Newsom mentioned waking up early to care for her sick children, preparing them for a bath, and stepping out of the room for what she thought was a minute but turned out to be 14 minutes. This lapse in supervision led to the tragic outcome, as confirmed by Officer Greg Lawson.
Following a warrant for her arrest issued on October 8, Newsom was apprehended on October 11. She appeared in court on October 15, where she posted bail set at $15,000 (£11,300). Newsom is expected to attend her arraignment hearing on November 25.
