In a recent court appearance, a mother facing charges of torturing and killing her 8-year-old son shielded her face from view after the boy was discovered inside a cooler filled with ice. The parents and grandmother of the victim, identified as Isaiah H, were accused of murder and torture following the distressing discovery at a residential complex on October 28, prompted by a neighbor’s concern.
During the court session, Isaiah’s mother, Destiny Luckie Harrison, 25, concealed her face, while his father, Daniel Alberto Monzon, 25, and grandmother, Ana Carcamo Zarceno, 45, were absent. Additionally, the trio faced charges of being accessories after the fact, as stated in a press release from the Los Angeles County District Attorney.
District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman expressed deep concern over the case, emphasizing the severity of the abuse Isaiah suffered at the hands of those who should have protected him. The abuse allegedly began in April this year, according to court records.
The three suspects were arrested and charged on October 31, the same day they were due in court in Compton, southern Los Angeles. Media reports revealed that Monzon refused to attend court, while Zarceno cited illness. Despite appearing in court, Harrison’s defense attorney used file folders to shield her face, even during her entrance into the courtroom.
Authorities faced challenges in confirming Isaiah’s age but stated that he was believed to be eight years old. Investigations revealed no evidence of his attendance at school. Following the discovery of Isaiah’s body, three other children aged 16, 14, and 9 were found at the same residential complex, with one of them reportedly witnessing the alleged torture.
Bail for the parents and grandmother has been set at $2 million each. If convicted, they could face a sentence of 32 years to life in a California state prison, according to the district attorney’s office.
