The eruption caused flight cancellations and delays in Malta as volcanic ash spread across the region. Catania airport, a key gateway to Sicily, often faces disruptions from Etna’s activities.
Recent volcanic events at Mount Etna, captured in photos, showed lava flows and smoke rising from the crater on July 5 and 6. Satellite imagery depicted the smoke plume from the volcano. A drone view showcased lava streaming down a slope during the eruption.
The volcanic activities have led to travel disruptions in eastern Sicily, with stranded passengers waiting at the airport terminal due to the closure caused by the ash cloud. While conditions seemed to improve, Malta International Airport cautioned travelers about potential disruptions. The extended restrictions at Catania airport have increased pressure on other airports in Sicily.
Palermo’s airport accommodated redirected flights from Catania, and Comiso airport, south of Catania, resumed full operations after suspending flights due to volcanic ash.
