MP Sarah Pochin Faces Criticism Over Diversity Comments

Date:

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has criticized Reform MP Sarah Pochin for her controversial remarks on the representation of Black and Asian individuals in media. Pochin, a close associate of Nigel Farage, faced backlash after expressing frustration over the visibility of Black and Asian people on screen, prompting Mahmood to comment on the issue during a gathering in Westminster.

Following the incident, thirty-five MPs have called for an investigation into Pochin’s conduct by Parliament’s standards chief, citing a potential breach of the Code of Conduct. Although Farage denounced Pochin’s comments as “ugly,” he has refrained from expelling her from the party.

In response to the criticism, Pochin defended her stance during a TalkTV phone-in, reiterating her discontent with the portrayal of Black and Asian individuals in advertisements. Labour MP Dawn Butler has spearheaded efforts to urge standards tsar Daniel Greenberg to probe the matter, labeling Pochin’s remarks as racist and incompatible with the principles of public life.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage expressed dissatisfaction with Pochin’s statements, acknowledging their insensitivity but emphasizing that he does not believe they were motivated by racism. Despite calls for disciplinary action, Farage maintained that Pochin’s intentions were not discriminatory and refrained from severe measures against her.
