“Navigating New Romance: Balancing Intensity and Space”

Date:

Dear Coleen

I’m a woman in my twenties and have recently started dating someone. While he is attractive and engaging, his excessive eagerness is dampening my interest. This level of attention early on is unfamiliar to me, as my past dating experiences were characterized by uncertainty about the other person’s feelings.

Our interactions have been quite intense so far – we spent a weekend together, I met his colleagues for drinks, his family, and even his pet, and he maintains constant communication through texts.

I am unsure if I am overthinking this or being unappreciative. Despite my friends’ positive opinions of him based on limited interactions, I feel the need to evaluate my emotions and regain some personal space. While I do not want to hurt him, I also acknowledge the possibility that he could be the right match for me. Should I interpret these signs as warnings or should I embrace the romantic possibilities?

Coleen advises

Considering the whirlwind of activities in a short time span, it’s understandable why the situation feels overwhelming. However, instead of prematurely ending the relationship, it might be beneficial to express your feelings openly and observe his reaction. If he demonstrates maturity by giving you space, it could indicate a positive direction. Simply communicate that while you enjoy his company, the pace feels rapid, and you require personal time and space to navigate your emotions.

If you genuinely see potential in the relationship, do not hesitate to share your thoughts. Establish a foundation of honesty and openness from the start.

Maintaining a level of longing and keeping the element of mystery alive can be beneficial. It’s important not to take each other for granted and strive to maintain mutual interest.

Compared to past relationships where commitment was lacking, a partner who openly expresses interest and seeks a serious connection should be viewed positively.

If the intensity feels overwhelming, consider slowing down the pace to create a balanced dynamic – it doesn’t have to be all or nothing.
