NHL prospect Matthew Mayich, originally from Hamilton and a former player for the Ottawa 67’s, is currently hospitalized in Arizona due to an incident during off-ice training, as confirmed by the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Mayich, 21, was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft.
Publicly available information on Mayich’s player record reveals that he participated in minor hockey with the Hamilton Huskies from 2016 to 2020 before joining the 67’s. According to the OHL, he was hospitalized on August 20 while preparing for the upcoming 2026-27 season in Arizona.
The St. Louis Blues have expressed their concerns and support for Mayich’s recovery. CBC Hamilton reached out to Arizona State University, where Mayich is listed as a player, seeking information on the incident. The university responded that a hockey team member collapsed during an outdoor morning exercise session and is currently hospitalized. They have refrained from disclosing the student’s identity and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Doug Armstrong, the Blues’ president of hockey operations, issued a statement expressing the organization’s solidarity with Mayich. Similarly, OHL commissioner Bryan Crawford conveyed well wishes to Mayich, his parents, and family, emphasizing the league’s support during this challenging time.
The Hamilton Steel Hockey Club, formerly known as the Huskies, has previously celebrated Mayich’s achievements, including his signing with the ’67s in 2021 and his selection by the Blues in 2023. The Huskies acknowledged his longstanding involvement with the organization since the age of nine.
