Health experts are cautioning about the potential for a high number of flu-related deaths this winter, as NHS leaders have issued an urgent “SOS” alert advising the public to get vaccinated. Figures from the UK Health Security Agency reveal a significant increase in flu-related deaths in England compared to the previous year. NHS chief executive, Sir Jim Mackey, acknowledged the upcoming winter season will present challenges, including managing resident doctor strikes.
To combat the anticipated flu outbreak, the NHS is encouraging individuals to receive flu vaccinations before winter arrives. Claire Nevinson, a superintendent pharmacist at Boots, emphasized the importance of vaccination in protecting against the flu and reducing its transmission. Eligible individuals can book a free NHS flu jab appointment promptly, while others can opt for a paid service available at various pharmacies like Boots, Tesco, and Well Pharmacy.
According to Claire, getting vaccinated in autumn offers the best defense against the flu virus, allowing the body to build immunity before the flu season peaks. The vaccine typically takes 10 to 14 days to be effective after administration. Claire debunked the misconception that flu vaccinations can cause the flu, explaining that any mild side effects are temporary and a normal response to the vaccine.
Annual flu vaccinations are recommended due to changing flu virus strains and declining immunity over time. Claire emphasized the importance of getting vaccinated to protect oneself and others from the flu, reducing the risk of virus transmission. It is advised to book a vaccination early to ensure timely protection during the flu season.
