The driveway of a luxurious coastal mansion in Malibu, reportedly owned by Nicolas Cage, collapsed early Tuesday morning due to a massive sinkhole opening up in front of the property. The incident led to a gas leak before 6 a.m., prompting a swift response from authorities and a utility company. SoCalGas, the utility provider, managed to control the leak after several hours but decided to temporarily halt natural gas services in a part of the street as a precaution against coastal erosion.
The sinkhole measures about 7.5 to nine meters in depth and spans 18 meters wide, extending into the roadway. Subsequently, local officials declared a state of emergency and issued evacuation orders for 31 properties in the vicinity. While requests for comments from Cage’s representatives went unanswered, property records from 2024 confirm Cage as the buyer of the mansion.
The mansion incurred damages during a coastal flooding advisory in the Los Angeles area, caused by the aftermath of Hurricane Marie reverting to a tropical storm. Although the storm did not directly hit land, it brought heavy rainfall and generated hazardous waves along the Southern California coast during the holiday weekend.
The City of Malibu stated on Wednesday that the sinkhole incident reflects broader coastal challenges in the region. The city remains vigilant in monitoring coastal erosion at various vulnerable points, including PCH (Pacific Coast Highway), Palisades Fire burn area, and Point Dume State Beach.
Situated between the ocean and the renowned Pacific Coast Highway, the private neighborhood where Cage’s mansion is located faced the sinkhole mishap. Cage, aged 62, recently appeared in the Amazon series “Spider-Noir” and is set to portray John Madden in an upcoming biographical film about the NFL figure later this year. With over 100 film credits to his name, Cage won an Academy Award for his role in “Leaving Las Vegas.”
