“Nightclub Rapist Sentenced to 9 Years in Prison”

Date:

A disturbing incident captured on CCTV revealed a rapist lurking in a Scottish nightclub, targeting victims shortly before drugging and sexually assaulting two women. Kenan Baki, aged 46, was sentenced to nine years in prison for raping one woman and sexually assaulting another after spiking their drinks at Society nightclub in Kirkcaldy, Fife, on September 2, 2023. During the trial at the High Court in Edinburgh, prosecutors presented footage showing the perpetrator moving around the club, seemingly scanning tables for unattended drinks while seeking out vulnerable women.

Additional CCTV footage shown to the jury depicted a woman collapsing in a chair at Baki’s nearby barber shop after he took her there when she started feeling unwell from the drugs. The footage showed the victim conversing with Baki as he gently touched her hair and pretended to style it with a hairdryer. Subsequently, the woman appeared to lose consciousness, with her head falling back in the chair. Baki then carried her to the back of the shop where he committed the rape, as reported by the Daily Record.

The court also heard that earlier that same night, Baki had drugged and sexually assaulted another woman by slipping an unknown substance into her drink. CCTV evidence showed the woman becoming unwell, struggling to move and stay awake before collapsing. Concerned members of the public later intervened and separated the victim from Baki.

Baki received an 11-year extended sentence, including nine years in prison, at the High Court in Kilmarnock for the charges of rape and sexual assault. He was placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely, and a non-harassment order was imposed for an indefinite period.

Fiona Kirkby, the Procurator Fiscal for High Court Sexual Offences, emphasized the significant danger posed by Kenan Baki due to his predatory and sexually deviant behavior towards women. She urged anyone affected by similar offenses to come forward and report their experiences to seek justice.

In the period between 2023 and 2024, 168 cases of drink spiking were reported to the police in Scotland. However, only nine of these cases were forwarded to the Crown Office, with the rest considered to lack sufficient evidence.

In Scotland, incidents of drink spiking are not classified as a separate criminal offense but are treated under drugging laws, where individuals are given substances without their consent, or prosecuted under the Sexual Offences Act.
