Novak Djokovic Faces Mixed Reception in Greece

Date:

Tennis icon Novak Djokovic faced a mixed reception in Greece as he attended a basketball match in his newly adopted country. Despite being a proud Serb originally from Belgrade, Djokovic recently relocated his family to Greece, sparking interest and debate among fans.

Known not only for his exceptional tennis skills but also for his love of sports, particularly basketball, Djokovic has been a regular presence at games involving Serbian teams like Red Star and Partizan. However, his appearance at a Euroleague game between Panathinaikos and Maccabi drew attention from local supporters, leading to boos when he appeared on the big screen.

Interestingly, Panathinaikos, a Greek team, holds a position just below Djokovic’s favorite Red Star in the rankings, adding fuel to the rivalry. Despite the negative reception, Djokovic seemed unfazed, engrossed in his phone while his son, Stefan, acknowledged the crowd with a peace sign.

In a contrasting scenario, Djokovic received a warmer welcome at a subsequent basketball game between Olympiacos and Monaco, where the crowd cheered his presence. Meanwhile, Panathinaikos emerged victorious over Maccabi in their Euroleague match, maintaining a competitive position relative to Red Star.

As Djokovic’s busy schedule includes the upcoming ATP Finals in Turin, conflicting with a match between Olympiacos and Partizan, it is unlikely he will attend. Despite speculations about his retirement and concerns about form and fitness, Djokovic is set to face tough opponents like Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev, and Taylor Fritz at the ATP Finals, where he is expected to receive a warmer reception from the crowd.

Furthermore, Sky has announced a discounted Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle for the 2025/26 season, offering a vast selection of live matches across various leagues, including an increased number of Premier League games compared to previous seasons.
