An atrocious incident unfolded where a nursery school teacher committed a heinous act by sexually assaulting her partner’s 4-year-old daughter, ultimately leading to the child’s tragic drowning in the bathtub.
The culprit, identified as Amber Lee Hughes, perpetrated the assault and murder of her partner’s daughter, Nada-Jane Chalita, on January 23, 2023. The court proceedings revealed that Nada-Jane’s father, Elie, entrusted Hughes with the child while he attended a job interview.
Following Elie’s departure, Hughes, feeling aggrieved by his perceived neglect, harbored suspicions of infidelity. In a disturbing communication sent prior to the abhorrent acts, Hughes expressed her anger and resentment towards Elie, indicating a vengeful intent.
Subsequently, Hughes placed Nada-Jane in the bathtub and sat on her until the child succumbed to drowning. Further examination revealed that Nada-Jane had also been sexually assaulted prior to her tragic demise.
During the trial at South Africa’s Johannesburg High Court, Hughes admitted to suffering from borderline personality disorder but acknowledged her awareness of her actions on the day of the incident. She attributed the event to a dispute with Nada-Jane’s father regarding his alleged infidelity, culminating in the fatal altercation.
Hughes confessed to leaving the child unattended in the bathtub with the water running after she became unresponsive. Following the heinous act, Hughes made several unsuccessful attempts to end her own life.
At the sentencing on October 27, Hughes cited her troubled childhood and mental health struggles as contributing factors to her behavior. Testimony from a social worker highlighted Hughes’ past experiences of bullying and self-harm tendencies.
Despite expressing remorse and a desire to undo her actions, the court deemed Hughes’ actions as premeditated, citing incriminating text messages exchanged before the incident as evidence of her malicious intent.
Hughes had entered into a relationship with Elie in 2021, residing with him and Nada-Jane. Testimonies revealed a tumultuous relationship with Hughes making repeated threats against Nada-Jane.
In August, Hughes was convicted of premeditated murder and rape, offenses carrying life imprisonment sentences. Elie, the grieving parent, expressed that no punishment could suffice for the magnitude of the tragedy.
He lamented, “The justice I seek does not exist in this world or lifetime.”
