Outspoken former judge on Britain’s Got Talent, Piers Morgan, is known for advocating free speech. However, there have been instances where the ex-editor of the Daily Mirror may have been overly forthright.
In a recent revelation, Morgan shared an incident where, just before a meeting with Donald Trump, he learned that the US president had a dossier detailing all the negative remarks Morgan had made about him.
Recounting the encounter to the Daily Telegraph, Morgan recalled Trump’s animated reaction: “Donald Trump was essentially furious with me. He was going through it line by line: ‘Did you refer to me as a mob boss? Did you say I should never run for office again? How could you betray me, my apprentice?'”
Realizing that Nigel Farage, who had launched a competing show on GB News, likely leaked the dossier to Trump to undermine the interview, Morgan needed a quick solution to salvage the situation.
Fearing the interview was at risk, Morgan decided that praising Trump was the best course of action: “I was really anxious at that moment, thinking, this interview is in jeopardy – how will I promote my show? This is a complete disaster.”
Interestingly, thinking on his feet akin to Celebrity Apprentice, Morgan turned the conversation towards golf, a sport Trump avidly enjoys.
Trump, known for his love of golf, has spent a significant amount of his presidency playing the sport. On approximately 38 out of the 280 days since his inauguration in 2025, Trump has been on the golf course, amounting to over 13% of his time in office thus far.
By a stroke of luck, Morgan had recently read an interview with golfing legend Ernie Els, who had played a round with Trump and reported that Trump had scored a hole in one. Morgan chose to highlight this impressive feat rather than delve into political criticisms.
Morgan recounted: “I brought up the topic of your hole in one. Everyone’s talking about it.”
This shift in focus immediately changed Trump’s demeanor, leading to a successful interview. Morgan acknowledged Ernie Els for inadvertently saving the day, while not forgetting Farage’s deceitful tactics, branding him a “treacherous weasel.”
Expressing his frustration, Morgan revealed how Farage had reciprocated a congratulatory message for an earlier interview with Trump by sabotaging Morgan’s interview.
“He returned the favor by undermining my interview,” Morgan lamented.
