Russian President Vladimir Putin has conducted a successful test of a nuclear torpedo with the capability to devastate vast coastlines, deeming it a significant achievement. This new weapon, similar to those in the arsenals of the US and UK, has the potential to trigger radioactive tsunamis, rendering entire coastlines uninhabitable. Putin expressed pride in the test, highlighting the successful launch of the torpedo from a carrier submarine, along with the activation of its nuclear power unit. He emphasized the unparalleled nature of this accomplishment, labeling it a major success.
According to Putin, the torpedo, named Poseidon, surpasses the power of the Russian-developed Sarmat intercontinental missile, also known as the SS-X-29 or Satan II. The recent test marks a series of demonstrations by Russia, including the activation of the “Flying Chernobyl” just days prior.
Furthermore, Russia’s top general announced the successful testing of an experimental cruise missile called Burevestnik, known as “Skyfall” by NATO. This low-flying missile, reportedly nuclear-powered and capable of indefinite range, demonstrated capabilities in evading missile and air defense systems. General Valery Gerasimov highlighted the precision and effectiveness of the Burevestnik missile against heavily fortified targets at any distance.
The timing of these tests was seen as a strategic message to US President Donald Trump following the breakdown of plans for a meeting in Budapest regarding the conflict in Ukraine. In response, President Trump mentioned the presence of a US nuclear submarine near the Russian coast, downplaying the significance of the Russian tests. Trump urged Putin to focus on ending the prolonged war rather than conducting missile tests.
