The agency overseeing Quebec’s bottle deposit program is implementing changes due to long wait times at its depots, potentially impacting Ontarians returning their containers. Despite extending operating hours, certain depots, like Jean-Proulx Consignaction+ near Ottawa, are facing overwhelming demand. While Quebec and Ontario have different container deposit systems, only Quebec refunds soft drink containers, juice, and milk jugs. Although it’s unlawful to seek refunds in Quebec for containers not bought there, some Ontarians attempt to do so.
To address these challenges, Ontarians will now have to utilize an “express return” option, allowing them to drop off unsorted containers at designated sites for processing and receive refunds via the Consignaction app after about a week. This method enables Consignaction to sort through containers and reject ineligible ones for refunds. Additionally, Consignaction may introduce more verification measures to confirm the containers’ origin in Quebec.
Moreover, Consignaction is launching seven new bulk return spots in Gatineau, including locations at 75 blvd. du Plateau, 140 blvd. Gréber, 178 rue Principale, and 1100 chemin Montréal W, with three more sites to be announced. Most return locations in Gatineau are situated within stores and can manage limited quantities of empty containers.
