“Quebec Man Makes History with Regenerated Liver Transplant”

A 64-year-old man from Quebec has made history in North America by being the first patient to undergo a liver transplant with a regenerated liver, thanks to a new technology that could potentially increase the availability of transplantable livers by up to 24 in its initial year alone. Gérard Landry, a resident of Nouvelle in Quebec, had been battling liver issues for 15 years, which eventually led to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Just before his surgery at the Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM), Landry was informed by his doctor that his liver had been regenerated using a novel machine.

The groundbreaking technology known as Liver Assist enables medical professionals to assess and treat a donated liver outside the body before transplanting it. This advancement meant that Landry could receive a liver that might have been deemed too risky for transplantation otherwise. Dr. David Hénault, a specialist in liver transplants at CHUM, led the team that performed the operation on Landry using the Liver Assist system, which had been in development for three years.

The Liver Assist system functions by connecting the donated liver to a machine that circulates an oxygen-rich fluid through the organ, potentially reversing some of the damage caused by oxygen deprivation while the liver is outside the body. This process allows doctors to evaluate the liver’s functionality using a blood-based solution under conditions that simulate the human body. Dr. Hénault stated that if the liver performs well on the machine, it is likely to function effectively once transplanted into a human recipient.

According to Dr. Hénault, the new technology could significantly increase the number of available livers for transplantations at CHUM, potentially adding 20 to 24 livers in the first year alone. This number is expected to rise as the technology becomes more widely adopted, offering hope to numerous patients awaiting liver transplants. Studies have shown that the use of this technology can reduce complications, reoperations, and hospitalization durations for suitable candidates.

For Landry, the benefits of the regenerated liver were evident almost immediately post-surgery, with improved blood work results surpassing expectations. The successful outcome of Landry’s transplant procedure has raised optimism about the potential of the Liver Assist technology in enhancing patient recovery and transplant outcomes. Landry is currently recuperating in Montreal but looks forward to returning to Gaspésie for his continued recovery, eager to reunite with his family, friends, and horses.

Landry also hopes that his experience will inspire conversations about organ donation, emphasizing the critical need for donated organs to complement advanced medical technologies. As Landry aptly puts it, advanced technology alone cannot suffice if there are no available organs for transplantation.
