Railway Worker hailed as hero for stopping train knifeman

Date:

The family of a railway worker who bravely confronted a knifeman during the Huntingdon train incident expressed their admiration, calling him a hero. Samir Zitouni, 48, is currently in critical condition after intervening in the attack on the Doncaster to London King’s Cross train, which reportedly prevented further harm during the frenzied stabbing spree.

Samir, a Customer Experience Host at LNER with over two decades of service, was commended by the British Transport Police for his courageous actions that led to diverting the train to Huntingdon following an emergency call.

In a statement, Samir’s family expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support and well-wishes received, highlighting the exceptional care from the hospital and LNER colleagues. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander praised Samir’s quick thinking and selfless bravery, emphasizing his heroic efforts that saved lives.

LNER’s Managing Director, David Horne, lauded Samir’s courageous response to the crisis, along with the collective bravery displayed by colleagues. The police are investigating potential links between the train attack and three prior incidents in Peterborough and London, involving stabbings and knife threats.

The suspect, Anthony Williams, faced charges of attempted murder, possession of a weapon, and assault on a police officer. Not known to counter-terror authorities, Williams has a reported history of mental health issues and was remanded in custody pending trial at Cambridge Crown Court on December 1.
