“Retired Journalist Overcomes Cancer, Relearns Eating”

Date:

Glenn Deir, a retired journalist residing in St. John’s, shares his experience of relying on six packs of Boost meal replacement drinks for sustenance following throat surgery due to cancer. Despite losing 15 pounds and facing swallowing difficulties post-surgery, Deir persevered through swallow tests under the watchful eyes of speech language pathologists. He was eventually deemed ready for intensive swallow therapy, marking a turning point in his recovery journey.

During his radiation treatment regimen, Deir navigated challenges such as coughing fits and reduced saliva production, which necessitated meticulous eating habits and constant monitoring. Despite these hurdles, he celebrated a breakthrough in his diet by reintroducing solid foods after five months, starting with a banana and gradually progressing to a variety of soft foods. With improved swallowing techniques and the support of his healthcare team, Deir has regained a semblance of normalcy in his culinary experience, albeit with lingering challenges.

Looking ahead, Deir remains optimistic about his recovery and grateful for the progress made in reclaiming his ability to enjoy meals. His journey serves as a testament to resilience and the importance of perseverance in overcoming health setbacks.
