A retirement complex in Wales faced a catastrophic flood that led to a major emergency situation, resulting in the evacuation of residents and leaving many trapped inside. The incident occurred as a significant portion of Carmarthenshire experienced intense flooding, submerging properties, roads, and homes. Emergency services swiftly responded to the severely affected area of Whitland, where they successfully rescued 48 trapped individuals using specialized equipment.
The Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) declared a major incident due to the extensive flooding in the region, receiving over 450 distress calls within a 12-hour period. These calls included reports of residents stranded in their residences and vehicles. Additionally, rescue teams were called to assist three individuals and two dogs trapped in a vehicle in rapidly flowing water at Ffarmers. The complex rescue operation involved the use of ladders to access the vehicle and safely extract the occupants, who were later attended to by Ambulance Service personnel.
Following the declaration of the major incident, Craig Flannery, assistant chief fire officer of MAWWFRS, commended the bravery and dedication of the operational crews in responding to the crisis. The tireless efforts of the rescue workers were acknowledged for their vital role in safeguarding the affected communities.
In response to the ongoing challenges posed by the flood, MAWWFRS expressed gratitude towards partner agencies for their collaborative efforts in managing the crisis and supporting recovery operations. The organization continues to coordinate with the Dyfed Powys Local Resilience Forum and other partners to address the aftermath of the flood and expects a demanding and prolonged recovery process.
